life insurance awareness monthWhen Having an 'Umbrella' Protects You Beyond the Rain

Brooke Insurance recognizes National Umbrella Month by informing people about the benefits of umbrella insurance policies

March is National Umbrella Month and although this awareness month usually focuses on the item used to keep us dry during a storm or shaded from the sun, Brooke Capital Corporation is using the opportunity to educate people about how an 'umbrella' can provide much more protection than they think.

"When it rains, it pours – and you'll be glad to know you have an umbrella," said Kyle Garst, chief executive officer of Brooke Capital. "We always tell our clients – and others, too – that it's better to have too much protection than not enough protection, especially when you're facing liability."

An umbrella insurance policy is a personal liability insurance that is typically inexpensive and extends coverage for accidents that involve serious personal injuries or extensive property damage. Some people may overlook the importance of this kind of policy, but it's something that could make a big difference when an individual finds him or herself in a tough situation.

"An umbrella policy can come in handy when your basic home or auto insurance is either not enough or it excludes coverage," Garst said.  Insureds are encouraged to consider the following examples in which an umbrella insurance policy becomes really important:

• You are in a bad automobile accident and you seriously injured or cause the death of another person involved in the accident.

• An elderly neighbor comes over to your home for a friendly visit and trips and falls on an elevated section of your walkway, seriously injuring him or herself

• A severe storm, tornado or hurricane causes a tree on your property to fall, seriously injuring your neighbor or damaging your neighbor's automobile

An umbrella policy takes over where the underlying liability from your current
insurance limits leave off. Therefore, the best way to determine the amount of coverage you need from an umbrella policy is to calculate the amount you would need if you were sued for everything you had. Then, consult with an insurance agent to put a policy in place.
